Calling RFDS Through the HF Radio Club People may not realise the HFRC has a number of ways to call the RFDS Directly.
The Legacy “selcall direct dial” method is still available for Any member regardless of Radio type or whether they have Travel Pack or not, however with more modern radio’s we have other alternative methods available. Such as:-
  • Making a telephone interconnect call to our Speed dial service, this sets up a Radio telephone call to RFDS via the selected radio base.
  • Making an ALE Telephone call thru our Speed dial service, this sets up a Radio telephone call to the RFDS via ALE. Note you need the ALE option and the HFRC ALE profile in your radio for this.
  • Press and Hold the Red Button for 3 seconds, this sets up a Radio telephone call to the RFDS via ALE. Note you need the ALE option and the HFRC ALE profile in your radio for this.

The “Red Button” method is by far the easiest way to get help FAST, anyone can do it even if they are untrained or unfamiliar with your radio. Using our advanced ALE network the Radio places a call through the best HFRC base directly to the RFDS Communications room at the RFDS Base in Pt Augusta. These operators are familiar with Radio Telephone calls and can quickly put the caller at ease and direct them as needed. The RFDS operator can also engage other services if needed without having to drop your call or call you back, They are Trained First Responders with the experience and modern communications systems available to them to get you help quickly be it for urgent medical, Aero evacuation or other issues which may befall the remote traveller. Most Codan NGT and all Envoy radios can get the Codan ALE option. For Information on ALE, the Red Button or anything else regarding Emergency RFDS calling or any of our other services contact the Committee
